A Brief Intro…
A scratchy vivid pink iPod filled with Bon Jovi, a similarly pink y2k (as we would call it now, much cooler then in 2012) CD player constantly on full volume to Bruno Mar’s ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ and Micheal Jackson’s music videos is perhaps where this all started - don’t worry my taste has evolved (I hope). Musical theatre posters on my wall as well, I’m really painting a good picture of what turned out to be a true passion.
I couldn’t tell you what a household is like without music, with a radio always on, a brother playing bass, a father listening to podcasts, a mum dancing in the kitchen. Life is music, and music gives us life - a cheesy mantra I have learned to embrace.
I’m Poppy, Bristol born and bred, and currently am working freelance in writing reviews for gigs, events and theatre all across the city. I love nightlife, in every shape and form, and live music is just pure joy. Whether that’s personally, culturally or socially, live events bring us together in an age so insular and obsessed with perfection; yet when you are in a room full of that excited anticipation as guitars are tested and amps are plugged in, there is nothing stopping anyone from dancing, shouting, laughing as a group of complete strangers. It’s hard to imagine this sort of phenomenon, taken for granted by so many, that simply live art can transport you to anywhere away from everyday life - whether that’s pop, punk, metal, jazz or rap, it can be a catalyst for change.
What drove me to reviewing was simply the fact that I’ve also always loved English, completing my A-Levels wasn’t the most inspiring, but my passion for the subject alongside training has lead me here to combine the two things I love.
Yet don’t get me wrong, I am still definitely a novice in reviewing. I would say take my articles not as bible truth, and always openly welcome criticism and room for growth. Critical writing is a balancing act I am still trying to master - I bet that those in the business for many more years then I have will say that it’s never a skill you can perfect. Yet, alas, I will always tell the truth: the thrills, the lows, the funny moments and all the rest that makes live performance so electric.
